The eyes of the world were carried in the last month towards Iceland, a country that don’t find itself in the headlines often, because of the wrong reasons.
You see, the eyes of the world could have focusing on Iceland, due to a beautiful record made by local composer Olafur Arnalds. Instead, they were playing around with a silly volcano, what a waste of time.
I’m not sure how the press works in Iceland, but I do hope that this volcano won’t take too much focus of Arnalds, that with all due respect to volcanos and natuer (someththing that is important for him, so it looks) – when such an amazing album And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness – who gives about volcanos. This album IS a volcano.
Arnalds is so young, and his composition is so solid, deep, interesting, thougtful, beautifully arranged, and emotional – Something here almost doesn’t seem right. This guy had released couple of EP’s so far, and it makes me wonder how such a young person reveals so much ‘self’ in the music, for almost 4 years of activity?
I didn’t find an answer. His compositions are piano based, Cello is added in most of the tracks. In Glepa Okkur you have some vocals and drums and edgy distorted clavinet/electric guitar sound. Both Юau Hafa Sloppiр Undan Юunga Myrkursins (the almost happy ending of the album) and Hagt, Kemur Ljosya is much more ‘post rock’ in its 2002 Yanquee UXO way but most of the tracks floats in the same direction and dynamics – soft piano, warm cello – classical-modern composition that brings to mind musicians like Rafael Anton Irisarri and Goldmund. So when you come to listen to the album, be ready for a warm and comforting melancholy that will sorround you and make your heart explode.
Too many people are talking about volcanos these days, but the eyes of the world should really tell the ears of the world, that in the bottom of the mountain, there’s a young musician who just released one of the best recrods in heard recently.
