I gotta admit, I’m pretty hooked on what’s happening in last couple of years in Finland. You may ask yourself – what can possibly happen these days in Finland? Well, a lot.
There’s an amazing scene of free folk/experimental stuff going on there, and the highlights are being released by Fonal Records. This is probably one of my most favourite labels operating today, and I strongly recommend you to check what’s the label’s up to, and their previous releases. The label is the brainchild of electronic musician Sami Sänpäkkilä, also known as Es.
Bands and artists like Es, Paavoharju, Islaja, Lau Nau and Tv-Resistori to name a few are some of the label’s finest artists, and I will try to write a bit about them from time to time. I went to the Fonal website, and found out there’s a new album by Tv-Resisotori about to be released, and the label has been given away one song for a free download. So it makes a good reason to write about them, don’t you think?
The band started off as a duo, with Yrjö’s and Päivi’s, male and female songwriters, where they describe themselves as something between Stereolab and Mouse On Mars (interesting combination). They were joined by drummer Aleksi, and now they function as a trio (or maybe an augmented trio, as it appears in the pictures).
Their style is a lo-fi bedroom synthpop, with the chilly Finnish atmosphere above. This is of course a cliche I just came up with, as it’s very hard to describe the music that comes from the far country, and the bizarreness of the language surly adds to the mystery. Funny, I talk about bizarre languages and my mother’s tongue is Hebrew, of the most bizarre languages exists.
In anyway, the new song, that I have no idea what it’s about, is fun and somewhat funny, and hints for another great album by the band.
